Dating my roommate
Of course, these photos also showed me other aspects that we shared: we’re from similar socioeconomic backgrounds, we’re both white, we’re even the same height and size. She wakes up at the crack of dawn, I tend to go to bed at the crack of dawn.
However, I don’t think being from similar backgrounds was the sole reason as to why we work as roommates. We have different fashion sense, different tastes in food. I know roommate pairings of people, who like us, appeared very similar but didn’t make good roommates.
Reflecting on my experience of roommate “shopping” made me think about how I may have chosen my friends.
Do I search for friends like I searched for a roommate?
In hindsight, I think what I was most looking for in a roommate was someone that was like me.
Someone who had similar characteristics and similar experiences. For example, when I think of a collegiate athlete, I have a particular idea of what constitutes the kind of person who is one: hardworking, dedicated, motivated.
In retrospect, I think what made me most drawn to my roommate was the layout of her Facebook page and the photos she decided to share.
I don’t think we can eliminate this, nor should we feel the need to eliminate all schemas or judgements altogether.
